Job Description

Integral Blue, LLC is seeking an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Engineer that will assist with all technical aspects of multiple ITS maintenance projects from developing repair plans to device failures, coordinating with a team of network engineers and developing estimates for system enhancements.  The ITS Engineer will work with a Project Manager to coordinate and oversee all day to day ITS maintenance activities.  The ITS Project Engineer will also work with and direct network engineers and ITS Field Technicians to ensure that they are properly equipped with material, plans, equipment and tools.  This position will work at the corporate Madison Heights, MI office.

Qualifications Required

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic, Computer Science, Information Technology, Information Systems Management or equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Must have excellent technical writing skills;
  • Good problem solving and analytical ability;
  • Good organizational skills and attention to details;

Any of the Following Qualifications Desired

  • Possession of a bachelor’s or master’s degree from a school and program accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission/Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (EAC/ABET) or Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB);
  • At least 4 years of acceptable engineering work experience obtained after having received an acceptable bachelor’s degree;
  • Received a passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination administered through the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES);
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Michigan;
  • Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD);
  • Networking Certifications:
    • CCNA;
    • CCNP;
    • CCIE;
    • CompTIA;
  • Building Industry Consulting Service International (BICSI) Certifications;
  • Fiber Certifications;
  • Wireless Certifications;
  • Any existing knowledge, skills, or abilities related to Intelligent Transportation Systems, video display systems, IT networks, or backhaul communications such as wireless, cellular, and fiber optics.

Essential Functions

Essential functions are fundamental, core functions that are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties.

  • Assist with overseeing day to day operations of several ITS maintenance projects;
  • Schedule, attend and run progress/coordination meetings, both internal and external;
  • Monitor and review work orders to ensure proper response times;
  • Assist with identifying out of scope work and coordinate with vendors and sub-contractors, when necessary, to develop estimates to complete work;
  • Assist with tracking and reporting progress of high priority work orders and out of scope work;
  • Work with clients and stakeholders to understand needs as they may relate to system upgrades/enhancements;
  • Develop estimates for system upgrades/enhancements, coordinate with vendors and sub-contractors when necessary to provide specialty services and/or material;
  • Work with Field Superintendent, Foreman and Project Managers to schedule field labor force to complete high priority work orders, out of scope work and system upgrades/enhancements;
  • Work with Field Superintendent, Purchaser, Warehouse Personnel and Project Managers to obtain material quotes and maintain adequate spare parts par levels;
  • Work with Project Managers to monitor, track and report labor and material costs for invoicing purposes;
  • Develop and/or review bill of materials for different technical project components;
  • Successfully communicate project scope and requirements to subcontractors, vendors and suppliers;
  • Assist Project Managers with proposal “take-offs” and requirements review in preparation for project proposals and bid estimates;
  • Assist with technical proposal development;
  • Assist with project specific engineering related to wireless radios, fiber optic cable, network engineering and ITS device integration;
  • Generate technical diagrams, engineering and as-built drawings, scopes of work, test plans and procedures, implementation plans and project schedules; and
  • Assist with updating communication network diagrams, fiber splice diagrams and Ethernet addressing layouts.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Intelligent Transportation Systems including video display systems, camera control systems, signal systems, video distribution systems, dynamic message sign systems and connected vehicle technology;
  • Knowledge of IT engineering guiding principles and practices, including Layer 2 / Layer 3 network design, data throughput capacity analysis, network security, and Frame Relay communications;
  • Knowledge of design theories and applications of multicast video traffic, including field experience on deployment of leased lines, wireless, fiber optic, and twisted pair Ethernet network devices and systems;
  • Knowledge of network components, device integration procedures, techniques, IP network design, architecture and compliance standards;
  • Knowledge of theories, practices, procedures, and methods applied to the installation, maintenance, repair, and modification of serial to Ethernet, RS-232 / RS-422 data, and other RS-232 analog control systems;
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment failure;
  • Skill in integration of analog and digital video systems into an IP environment;
  • Skill in writing, compiling, and reviewing technical data, specifications and documentation;
  • Skill in interpreting technical information and producing deployment plans;
  • Skill in installing, maintaining, integrating, and testing IT electronic and network systems;
  • Skill in operating specialized electronic testing tools, diagnosing problems in sensory and control equipment, and recommending corrective action;
  • Skill in assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands;
  • Ability to work cooperatively with DOT personnel, contractors, governmental agencies, the general public, and others to prevent, resolve, or minimize ITS related problems;
  • Ability to read, understand and follow complex specifications, schematics, and manuals;
  • Ability to schedule projects and order necessary materials and equipment;
  • Ability to give instructions in work procedures, safety practices, technical aspects, department policies and related requirements;
  • Ability to present ideas effectively, both orally and in writing; and
  • Ability to plan assignments and supervise professional and technical personnel.
