Fiber Optic Field Technician

Job Description
Integral Blue, LLC is currently seeking an experienced Fiber Optic Field Technician that will be responsible for ITS field installation, integration, and maintenance activities. This position will work out of our Madison Heights, Michigan office and will require regular travel to locations throughout Michigan’s lower peninsula. Some work in the upper peninsula and out of state may be required.

Essential Functions
Essential functions are fundamental, core functions that are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all job duties.
• Splice fiber optic cables including both loose tube and ribbon optic cables. Construct a proper splice case, including but not limited to: grounding, bonding, isolation, slack storage and sealing. Prepare and maintain splicing records, schematics and diagrams.
• Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and repairs fiber optic infrastructure.
• Perform acceptance test procedures for fiber optic infrastructure to include OLTS and OTDR testing.
• Repairs copper-wired, fiber-optic, and wireless communication systems related to intelligent transportation systems equipment.
• Interprets blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams for the purpose of diagnosing fiber optic infrastructure and related systems equipment.
• Responds to emergencies relating to problems and situations involving fiber optic infrastructure.
• Detects, locates, and marks out underground utilities.
• Operates motorized equipment such as an aerial lift device with extended arm for purposes of terminating, splicing, testing and repairing fiber optic infrastructure.
• Diagnoses, troubleshoots, and repairs a variety of intelligent transportation systems equipment and network infrastructure.
• Repairs copper-wired, fiber-optic, and wireless communication systems related to intelligent transportation systems equipment.
• Tests intelligent transportation systems equipment using detection software and a variety of testing devices such as multi-meters, meggars, GPS equipment, and oscilloscopes.
• Interprets blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams for the purpose of diagnosing intelligent transportation systems equipment.
• Applies the standards, principles, and practices of the Corporate safety manual, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and the National Electrical Code.
• Responds to emergencies relating to problems and situations involving intelligent transportation system equipment.
• Detects, locates, and marks out underground utilities.
• Operates motorized equipment such as an aerial lift device with extended arm for purposes of repairing and replacing intelligent transportation systems equipment.
• Perform acceptance test procedures for new ITS system components.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• Knowledge of how to fusion splice both loose tube and ribbon fiber optic cables. Know how to place a mid-sheath splice.
• Knowledge of electronics and electrical wiring theory, principles, and practices.
• Knowledge of electrical and electronic repair practices.
• Knowledge of electronic and electrical safety standards, policies, and procedures.
• Knowledge of reading schematics, blue prints, and wiring diagrams.
• Knowledge of interpreting the Corporate safety manual, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and the National Electric Code.
• Knowledge of mathematical computations.
• Knowledge of using testing and detection instruments and devices.
• Knowledge of using hand and power tools.
• Knowledge of using various test equipment to diagnose and troubleshoot communications equipment malfunctions.
• Knowledge of detecting and locating underground utilities.
• Knowledge of using a multi-meter to measure resistance, current, and voltage.
• Knowledge of using a personal computer to operate software applications.
• Skill in using standard fiber optic preparation and splicing equipment , and OTDRs
• Ability to perform aerial vehicle operations.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others
• Ability to differentiate between different sizes and colors of wires/cables
Qualifications Required
• Direct on-the-job experience with installation, termination, splicing, testing, certification and documentation of fiber optic cabling and associated infrastructure
• A high school diploma, or equivalent
• Good problem solving and analytical ability
• Good organizational skills and attention to details
• Clean driving record
